David “Wink” Leroy Van Winkle died peacefully at home on Monday, March 5, 2018, in Trotwood, Ohio, at the age of 76 surrounded by loved ones. David is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bettie Ann Arbaugh Van Winkle, children Tony Van Winkle (Valerie) of Palm Desert, CA, Michelle Van Winkle-Maiden (Doug) of New Lebanon, Lori Varney of Dayton, and sister Betty Marie Lindstrom (Otto) of Cleveland. He is also survived by grandchildren, Heather Dane of Brookville, Tessa Brickles of Trotwood, Delaney Van Winkle of Scottsdale, AZ, Addison Van Winkle of Palm Desert, CA, Luke and Levi Maiden of New Lebanon, and five great-grandchildren (Nakia, David, Briena, Zachary, and Remi), along with many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by parents Basil and Mildred Van Winkle, granddaughter Samantha Ann Varney, niece Rhonda Vincent, nephew John Arbaugh, and numerous aunts and uncles. David was born on October 19, 1941, in Lexington, KY to Basil and Mildred Van Winkle. He attended Hickorydale and Fairview High School in Dayton. He fell in love with Bettie Ann, his childhood sweetheart, and they married two years later. They started their family while living in Dayton, and with the birth of their first child, the Van Winkles amassed five living generations. David and Bettie Ann later moved to Trotwood where they’ve spent the last forty years.
David was employed for thirty years by the City of Dayton as Superintendent of Municipal Golf Courses. He then spent the next twenty years doing what he loved best, landscape design and maintenance, alongside his long-time friend, Mark “Torkel” Seitz, at Life of Riley Landscape Services. Best known as “Wink” by the Megacity Hockey Club, David played goalie for twenty years, many in the net opposing his son, Tony. He was a devoted family man spending many summers fishing and camping at Lake Erie with his kids and grandkids. Most recently, David spent his free time with friends in the Old Time Cruisers Car Club, winning awards for his prized 1949 Chevy Pickup Truck.
