Ruth K. Coons, 98, of Springfield, Ohio and formerly of Worthington, Ohio, passed away on December 4, 2017. She was born in Buffalo, N.Y., September 16, 1919 to Roscoe and Mildred Kittinger.

Ruth graduated from Buffalo Children’s Hospital School of Nursing and was hired as Supervisor of Communicable Diseases and Infectious Control. After serving in several additional positions, including teaching both nursing and medical students, she became the Director of Christian Education at the First Presbyterian Church in East Aurora, N.Y. The family moved to Worthington, Ohio in 1962 where Ruth held volunteer positions in various organizations as well as owning a public relations business and co-owning a home construction business with her husband, John A. Coons. She was Director of Christian Education for the Broad Street Presbyterian Church of Columbus for four years and returned to nursing as Charge Nurse at the American Red Cross.

Following her retirement, she remained active with the American Red Cross retiree organization, Republican Women’s Club and the John J. Gerlach Center for Senior Health where she held numerous volunteer and leadership positions. She remained committed to her Presbyterian faith throughout her life. Ruth served as Moderator of the Presbytery of Scioto Valley and on the Senate of Ohio’s personnel committee. She chaired both the Mission and Ecumenical councils, served as Ruling Elder and was actively involved at the Worthington Presbyterian Church in numerous capacities. Additionally, she was involved in various roles in Riverside Methodist Hospital’s Executive Board of Volunteers.

She was married to John A. Coons for 55 years until his passing in 1995. She has a son Gary J. Coons of Springfield, Ohio and a daughter Marcia (Larry) Vorhees of Punta Gorta, Florida. She also has 2 step granddaughters and 3 step great grandsons. Ruth led a remarkable, full and accomplished life volunteering, leading and teaching in all aspects of her action-packed years. She will be sincerely missed by all of her family and the organizations, staff and co-workers she has known throughout her years.

A “Celebration of Life” will be held on April 14, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Worthington Presbyterian Church, 773 North High Street, Worthington, OH 43085.
