Joseph E. Downs, 84, of Dayton, passed away on January 16, 2017 at Wood Glen Alzheimer's Community. Joe was born on October 4, 1932 to the late Merle and Elsie (Skapic) Downs in Dayton, Ohio.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley (Barnhart) Downs, and sister, Colleen Ayers.

Joe is survived by his son, Joseph (Catherine) Downs II; grandsons, Joseph (Hollie) Downs III and Dustin (Amber) Downs; great-granddaughters, Brooklynn, Bailey, and Kallie Downs; identical twin, Leroy (Linda) Downs; sister, Barbara (Ed) Schlegel; special friend, Anne Dohn; and numerous other friends and family.

Joe served our country in the US Army as an MP during the Korean War with his brother, Leroy. Joe retired as a manager for General Motors when he was 52. He enjoyed bowling, golf, boating, and was an avid fisherman. He and his wife Shirley raised their family in West Carrollton, Ohio, and eventually moved to Florida to spend their retirement together. Joe was a loving father and grandfather and will be missed dearly.

Visitation will be held Saturday, January 28, 2017, 12:00pm - 2:00pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, Kettering, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2017, 2:00pm at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Kettering, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Miami Valley.
