David John Browne
Biography

Born: November 17, 1941, Belleville, Ontario, Canada
Parents:
Father: John (Jack) Alfred Brown (The “e” was later added to the Brown by my father); Born September 12, 1912, Wolverhamton, England
Mother: Daisy Viola Petre; Born October 5, 1907, Belleville, Ontario, Canada

I lived most of my early childhood in Belleville, Ontario, Canada next door to my Aunt and Uncle. The land on Coleman Street adjacent to my relatives was given to my parents as a wedding gift by my aunt and uncle and later my Father with the assistance of a few of his friends built a two story house on the site. My aunt and uncle’s house following their death was purchased by my mother’s sister and her husband. While living in the house on Coleman Street, I attended King George School.

In September of 1950 when I was nine years old, my parents and I left Belleville, Ontario, Canada and moved to the United States. We settled in St Petersburg, Florida. My father was offered employment there by a close friend. Dad was a skilled carpenter and the wages were so much better in St Pete than in Belleville. For several years we lived in rental houses and even once in a small trailer home. During the late 1950’s Dad purchased a small corner lot outside the city and later built an elegant but quaint two bedroom house.

In 1960 I graduated from Dixie Hollins Vocational High School St Petersburg, Florida and in September of the same year I enlisted into the United States Air Forces as a Canadian volunteer. This was the result of the military draft requirement. My Air Force career field was in Air Transportation. Following my graduation from Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, I returned home and married Marian Dale Romano and we had our first daughter Deborah Sue born on January 2, 1960. Our first permanent base of assignment, PCS was Homestead AFB, Florida. While there, we had our first son, Dwayne David John born on June 30, 1962. From there I went PCS for twelve months to Kimpo AB, Korea. About half way through my tour, I was promoted to Airman First Class, A1C. Shortly before my PCS return date, I was involved in a pedestrian hit and run accident. That evening I was transferred from Kimpo Air Base Dispensary to the Army’s 21st Air Evacuation Hospital. Shortly thereafter, I departed Korea PCS and was temporary assigned to the Medical Center at McDill AFB, Florida. The temporary assignment was due to my medical injuries resulting from my accident and recent Tuberculosis medical diagnosis. Following my release from the McDill AFB Medical Center, I was airlifted to Scott AFB, Illinois for additional medical treatment. Following the treatment, we were PCS’d to Hunter AFB, Georgia. While in Savannah, Georgia we had our second son, Michael Brian born on February 13, 1965. Our next PCS move was to Norton AFB, California. While there, I was promoted to Staff Sergeant, SSgt. In 1967 I was PCS’d for twelve months to Danang AB, Vietnam and was there in 1968 during the North Vietnamese’s major combat offensive move the Tet (the lunar New Year as celebrated in Southeast Asia). From Vietnam I was PCS’d to Travise AFB, California. Our next PCS was to the Naval Air Facility at Naples, Italy where we stayed for several years. While there I was promoted to Technical Sergeant, TSgt. Following the Naples assignment, I was hand selected for a special assignment PCS to Maguire AFB, New Jersey, and was assigned to Headquarters 21st Air Force. While there, I was promoted to Master Sergeant, MSgt. In May of 1976, I was once again hand selected for another special assignment at Howard AFB, Panama Canal Zone. I was the Southern Command’s Designated Agent for All Airlift Matters in Central and South America. While there we had our second daughter, Kathy Jenee on October 15, 1977. From the Panama Canal Zone I was PCS’d to Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio. While there I was promoted to Senior Master Sergeant, SMSgt. Following 22 years of active duty service, I retired on August 31, 1982.

Upon my departure from the United States Air Force I worked several local civilian jobs. In 1984 I accepted a Civil Service position at Wright Patterson AFB. Following a Civil Service cut, I was moved to Area B and worked several years in the Logistics Support Contractor field. In October of 1998, I married Jean Sagraves and I finally retired at fifty eight years old settling down in Riverside at 674 Wagon Wheel Drive. I became very interested in Riverside community volunteer work. First, I was appointed to serve on a city Blue Ribbon Committee. The committee consisted of members of Council, City Staff, and several appointed resident members. Our task was to discuss ways to enhance our city and different options used to gain resident support for an upcoming Riverside Police Levi. I chaired the Riverside Citizen Advisory Committee, made up of the appointed resident Blue Ribbon Committee members. Our charter was to continue looking for ways to improve our city and introduce potential new businesses to the City Staff. Later I became involved with the city’s Founder’s Day Festival Committee and actively served for several years. During this time period I was also appointed to serve on the city’s Board of Zoning Appeals. Later I joined the Riverside Historical Society becoming an active member and held positions as the Vice President and trustee for several years. I also was appointed to serve on the Health and Safety Commission, while on the commissions I played a major role in establishing our City’s Bark Park; a special place for dogs to go off leash and socialize with other dogs. During 2010, my Pomeranian dog, Whiskee and I became certified members of Therapy Dogs International. For several years Whiskee and I visited several memory care facilities monthly providing laughter and smiles to many beautiful faces. I also served on the City Chamber of Commerce as an Ambassador for several years.

Condensed version: My childhood life was filled with fun in the snow living in Canada and then moving to the United States. In 1960 I graduated from high school in St Pete, Florida and joined the United States Air Force. You have a little history of the tours served and some of the foreign countries I or my family and I lived in during my 22 year Air Force career. Following my active duty service I spent years at Wright Patterson AFB Civil Service and as a contractor. I closed with a breakdown of some of my local volunteer work both Riverside city level and community Riverside appointments.
